The Orvieto Wine

The wine of Orvieto deserves a space of its own, being one of the most famous local products of the city and a leading product of agriculture since the distant Etruscan era. The hilly countryside around Orvieto in fact offers fertile ground both for the cultivation of olive trees and for the cultivation of vines. The wine obtained from the Orvieto vineyards has produced an excellent wine since the first productions and has always been appreciated and historically linked to the city, as evidenced by the appellation given to Orvieto of “Terrae Vineate“. Etruscans and Romans were great producers and consumers of wine and even when the city was under the aegis of the Papal state, a vast area (which covers the current surface of the former Caserma Piave) was used for the cultivation of vines: this large surface of the cliff was known as Vigna Grande. The production of wine in Orvieto has never stopped going through different eras and historical periods.

The Orvieto Classico DOC wine is available as a white wine (Orvieto Classico and Orvieto Classico Superioreand red wine (Rosso Orvietano DOC)

In the Orvieto territory, however, there are other prestigious wines such as the “Lago di Corbara” DOC, and finally the IGT Allerona.
Excellent distillates, grappas and vinsanto are also obtained from the precious grapes of the Orvieto vines. In addition to wine and its derivatives, in Orvieto the “Svinnere” also deserves a mention,  liqueur made from wild sour cherries which is produced in small quantities according to an ancient recipe of the Orvieto tradition.
