Abbey of Saint Severo and Martirio

badia

Sitting just below the cliff in the countryside of Orvieto is a majestic Abbey of Saint Severo and Martirio. A twelfth-century monastery that now houses a hotel, characterized by the majestic tower do-decagon stylistically similar to the one next to the church of Sant’Andrea.

It is locally known as “La Badia”, and its presence in the area is underlined since the year 1055, however, the complex was modified several times over the years for structure and purpose.

It is felt that the abbey was built around an ancient church (San Silvestro), then in the Middle Ages and until 1221 was a Benedictine monastery.

Subsequently to disagreements with the then Pope these monks were expelled from Orvieto and their place was taken by other Premonstratensian canons (or norbertini). During their presence at the complex already included a church, the characteristic bell tower and the monastery,  added later was the cloister and refectory.

Today the abbey is a private hotel
