Funicular & City Bus

Information on public mobility in Orvieto, from the funicular railway that quickly connects Orvieto with Orvieto center to the city bus and minibus service. The main starting point of the buses is Piazza Matteotti in Orvieto scalo (a large square where are located the Orvieto railway station and the funicular station) and from where buses arrive and depart for the center and other places in the area. In the center, the main arrival square is Piazza Cahen.

Orvieto Funicular

Funicolare orvietoThe funicular stations are in Piazza Matteotti (the same as the train station) and in Piazza Cahen (up on the city center). The funicular (cable-car) leads you to the city center of Orvieto in a few minutes, and once you get out, in Piazza Cahen you can stroll along the main Corso Cavour or, alternatively,  take the local urban buses that stop in the main squares (Piazza Duomo, Piazza della Repubblica) and streets.
The funicular has been used for a long time in the city, in fact before the actual modern electric powered cable car, in the past there was a hydraulic funicular driven by a smart water counterweight. For this reason there was a water basin used solely for this purpose.
