What can i see in Orvieto in 1 day?

Orvieto’s historic center isn’t very large, yet it’s packed with monuments, views, and attractions that can’t always be fully appreciated in a single day. For this reason, we recommend at least two days to fully explore the city. A thorough visit to the Duomo (including the adjacent Museo dell’Opera del Duomo) and St. Patrick’s Well alone will require at least two to three hours. That said, there are still many other things to see in Orvieto, from museums to the city’s many underground passages.

Orvieto is a city of art rich in hidden treasures. Among the unmissable works are masterpieces of painting, especially the fresco cycle in the Chapel of San Brizio inside the Cathedral. Signorelli’s masterpiece, depicting scenes from the Last Judgement, seems to have influenced Michelangelo. Also noteworthy are the frescoes in the Church of San Giovenale. Among the sculptures not to be missed in the Cathedral are the Pietà by Ippolito Scalza, the statues of the Apostles and Saints (recently relocated to the cathedral), and above all the sculptural group of the Annunciation by F. Mochi. The statue of the “Annunciating Angel” is considered the first Baroque-style sculpture in the history of art. Also worthy of note is the funerary monument of Cardinal De Braye, created by Arnolfo di Cambio and visible in the Church of San Domenico.
