The funicular runs along the same route of the original\u00a0one of Orvieto which worked with an ingenious water counterweight system. The first funicular\u00a0in the city was built and commissioning in October of 1888 by the entrepreneur G. Bracci. The original project was the work of <strong>Adolfo Cozza,\u00a0<\/strong>a local engineer whose bronze statue\u00a0is placed near\u00a0the Palazzo del Popolo.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-8008 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.orvietoviva.com\/nuovosito\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/serbatoiofunicolare-150x100.png\" alt=\"serbatoiofunicolare\" width=\"150\" height=\"100\" \/>To operate the\u00a0original system required\u00a0water, in the past there was in Orvieto center a water basin for this purpose.\u00a0Today the remains of this water basin (pics on the left) is near the parking of Via Roma.\u00a0A\u00a0restored model of a water-powered funicular\u00a0is now visible in\u00a0<strong>Piazza della Pace<\/strong> (the square under the train station) and it is free to visitors from the new information desk and coffee bar.
