A twelfth-century monastery that now houses a hotel, characterized by the majestic tower do-decagon stylistically similar to the one next to the church of Sant&#8217;Andrea.<\/p>\n<p>It is\u00a0locally known as <strong>&#8220;La Badia&#8221;<\/strong>, and its\u00a0presence in the area is underlined since the year 1055, however, the complex was modified several times over the years\u00a0for structure and purpose.<\/p>\n<p>It is felt that the abbey was built around an ancient church (San Silvestro), then in the Middle Ages and until 1221 was a Benedictine monastery.<\/p>\n<p>Subsequently to disagreements with the then Pope these monks were expelled from Orvieto and their place was taken by other Premonstratensian canons (or norbertini).\u00a0During their presence at the complex already included a church, the characteristic bell tower and the monastery, \u00a0added later was the cloister and refectory.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1654675426328{margin-top: 10px !important;margin-right: 10px !important;margin-bottom: 10px !important;}&#8221;]Today the abbey is a private hotel[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;15px&#8221;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text][\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;15px&#8221;][vc_media_grid grid_id=&#8221;vc_gid:1733224470649-d6e6999e-978a-8&#8243; include=&#8221;24793,24795,26208&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sitting just below the cliff in the countryside of Orvieto is a majestic Abbey of Saint Severo and Martirio.
